AUTOCAD TUTORIAL OF THE DAY - QSELECT

                           AUTOCAD TUTORIAL

                                      Quick Select

                  Tools -Quick Select
Keyboard QSELECT
Quick Select made it's debut in AutoCAD 2000 and is designed to help users make complex selections quickly. It is also designed to be a simplified version of the Filter command, detailed below. Quick Select allows you to make selections based upon object properties. Say, for example, that you needed to select all circles on a layer called Water. Quick Select can help you do this. If you look at the dialogue box below, you will see that there are a number of parameters to set. To select all circles on the Water layer, you would make the settings shown in the dialogue box.
                                    Quick Select dialogue box
                                                            Click the image to enlarge

Let's have a closer look at the selection parameters in the Quick Select dialogue box. As with all dialogue boxes, it is important to move methodically through the various parameters. It is even more important in this case because the choices you make at the beginning of the process will affect the options available to you later. Start at the top of the dialogue with "Apply to" and work your way down.
  1. The "Apply to" parameter can be used to cause the selection to be made from the entire drawing or from a selected part of the drawing. Use the Select objects button to create a selection set from which your more detailed selection will be made.
  2. The "Object type" parameter allows you to select objects such as circles, lines etc. The drop-down list contains an inventory of all the different object types in the current drawing. If your selection is to be made from more that one object type, select "Multiple". Note that this parameter only allows you to select one object type or all objects. This is one limitation of Quick Select, although you can append selections to create compound selection sets, see below. However, if you want to make complex selections based upon multiple selection criteria, you may be better of using the more advanced features of the Filter command described below.
  3. The "Properties" parameter allows you to specify which paricular property of an object type to apply to the selection. For example, circle properties include radius, diameter and circumference in addition to the standard object properties like layer and colour. So you could select all circles with with a particular radius or all circles on a particular layer.
  4. The "Operator" parameter determines how the value is applied to the selection. For example, using the equals option with a circle radius and a value set to 24 would mean all circles with a radius of 24 are selected. However, other options available for the operator parameter allow you to select all circles of radius less that 24 or greater than 24 or even all circles except those with a radius of 24. Pretty amazing huh?
  5. The "Value" parameter is used to specify the value of the property you have already chosen. For example, if you had specified Circle and Radius as your object type and property, you might enter "24" as a value. All circles with a radius of 24 would be selected. Or if you had specified Circle and Layer as your object type and property, you could select a layer name such as "Water". In this case, all circles on the layer called Water would be selected.
Finally, using the "How to apply" box, you have the option to have the selected objects either included or excluded from the new selection set. In addition, you can also have this selection appended to the current selection set. The "Append to current selection set" option is particularly useful because it means that you can use Quick Select repeatedly to build up compound selections. For example, you could use Quick Select to select all blue circles and then use it again to select all blue lines. Appending the blue lines selection to the blue circles selection would mean that you end up with a selection of all blue lines and circles.
As you can see, this is a very powerful tool and takes a little time to get used to. However, it is well worth making the effort as it can drastically improve your drawing efficiency. For your convenience, Quick Select is also available from the right-click context menu.

TRENDS IN AUTOCAD

                                             LATEST TREND IN AUTO CAD

SOURCE : FINANCIAL EXPRESS (http://tinyurl.com/ng2vksk)

Auto desk is a brand synonymous to computer-aided design (CAD) software. Quite a large number of people—from design professionals, engineers and architects to digital artists and students—have used Autodesk software at some point of time to unlock their creativity and solve important challenges. However, the San Rafael, California headquartered firm wants to change that perception. Autodesk senior vice-president of worldwide sales and services Steven Blum stresses that the company actually has a much broader portfolio with industry specific suites. Prior to this position, Blum was senior vice-president of Americas sales at Autodesk. Under his leadership, revenue in the Americas more than doubled to over $700 million. Bullish on India, the Autodesk sales and services head tells Heena Jhingan that the introduction of mobile devices into the construction industry is transforming the way that projects are built and managed. Excerpts:

What are your efforts to re-create a brand beyond the CAD image?
We actually have a much broader portfolio with industry specific suites. I don’t think that is well understood by a lot of people in the industry. Autodesk is much more than AutoCAD, the core design, drafting and modelling software application. We focus on manufacturing, architecture, engineering and construction space. Most of the people know us for the architecture part, however we have been building our portfolio around engineering and construction bit as well.

Construction has become a very important part of our over all portfolio. Our solution is addressing the needs that construction industry globally has had for many years, but did not take the advantage of technology because it wasn’t being presented to solve their problems and we are changing that. We also service the manufacturing and automotive industry. Media and entertainment is another part of the business that a lot of people don’t know us for. However, that is changing. For example, our product Revit is now an industry standard for building information modelling (BIM). In fact BIM is the centre of all our AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) business efforts. We see BIM key to discussions with our customers in most markets, including India.

TRICKY BRAINY QUESTIONS

Ha we have seen lots of questions and diagrams in Autocad. These questions won't allow you pass in the INTERVIEW. Here are some brainy tricky question to refresh you from AUTOCAD

Let's Go brainy

SOURCE :  http://tinyurl.com/onxubaa

1.Based on what you know about us, what could we be doing more efficiently?
RAMESH SHANKAR, EVP and cluster HR head, South Asia at Siemens says he would play it safe while answering it. One could say it's not possible to say much as an outsider and what he knows is public knowledge. Another way would be to talk about new ideas that the company could look at and how the candidate can help implement them.
2.Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10.
A majority of candidates tend to go with a safe answer, rating themselves typically between 6 and 8. Some, who are in frontline sales etc, rate themselves higher at 9-10 . Their explanation is they have been at the top of their team and have consistently been overachieving. "To them, we ask a follow-up question: In order for you to go to the next level, what are the areas you need to develop?" says Madhavi Lall, regional head-HR , India & South Asia, at Standard Chartered Bank.
3.Did you think of leaving your current position earlier? If so, what has made you stay till now?
An impressive answer here would be: "I'm not actively looking out but, am open to exploratory conversations on opportunities which can help me grow my career." There are many who are quite direct as well, saying that they don't get along with their line manager/boss.
4.How would you evaluate your present company?
Managers say that candidates should not complain about the their current company. "Focus on your strengths and weaknesses," says Shankar. You could talk about why it is not working out for you, and why you are looking to move on.
5.What can you do to take your boss's job?
Managers rarely get a good answer to this one. One that would score with them would be something like "to get a job at the next level (consciously avoiding using the phrase 'boss' job' ), I'd consistently outshine in my current role while continuing to build my skillsets." "Responses which we usually get are "I don't want to do my boss's job" while there are people who say: "I think I'm better" . To the latter we ask the followup question: Then, why haven't they taken you for the next level yet?" says Lall.
6.If God was outside the interview room, what are the three wishes you would ask from him?
Prashant Deo Singh Head, HR & general affairs, Panasonic India, asked this question to a few candidates . "There are some people who come up with selfish responses that only concern them; others have larger goals like doing something for others. We try to evaluate the responses to gauge a candidate's philosophy in life and to see if it matches with that of the company," he says.
7.The Interviewer could just pick up an object, for instance a pen, and ask, how would you market it?
It shows how fast the person can think on his feet. The question is essentially targeted at a sales or marketing professional . Deo Singh says the really good candidates immediately start a selling spiel when faced with this question.
8.What is the wildest thing that you have done in life?
This question is asked to test the determination, passion and commitment of a person, according to Ashutosh Telang, executive vicepresident & head, HR at Marico. Responses may vary: I had a fear of heights but I overcame it by bungeejumping . Or someone who has a love for travelling might say that he/she took a break for three months and backpacked through the country. "Of course, you can also get some ridiculous responses where the person is clearly fibbing," says Telang.
9.What is your most embarrassing moment? How did you deal with it?
HR managers feel this question helps in understanding a candidate's ability to deal with delicate situations. For instance , this might showcase a candidate's ability to convert a potential crisis into an opportunity, they feel. The answer could be based on a personal or a professional moment but the emphasis should be on what they learnt and how they converted it into an opportunity.
For instance, an anecdote like how a candidate might have been reprimanded for not wearing the correct uniform while at school and how that taught him the importance of discipline in life.
10.Have you ever been approached to do something unethical at work and what did you do?
That's the trickiest question. Should you be honest? Shankar feels the candidate should have the courage to be honest. "It is okay to admit to making a mistake if the reasons given are substantial, rather than faking it. The interviewer would be quick to catch the lie otherwise," he says.
